Hello and welcome. I’m Michelle.
I desire to help children, teens, adult individuals and families find their inner strengths in a safe environment where you can explore and understand yourself more deeply. I encourage you to explore and recognize feelings and patterns that are no longer serving you.
Together, we can work to understand these patterns and create new behaviors and coping skills. We will work to cultivate a healthier relationship with yourself, your loved ones, and the world around you.
Finding your freedom from perfectionism and your self-doubt
You never feel like you are good enough. At work, at home. As a friend, as a partner, as a family member. You might have accomplished something big, but you constantly feel behind. You could always do better no matter what you accomplish or how hard you work. You are never quite where you want to be or where you know you could be if you were just a little bit better. A little bit more perfect.
Your inner dialogue can be negative and self-destructive. You know this is an unhealthy thought pattern. You know you have unrealistic expectations for yourself. You can’t find the root cause. You don’t see an end in sight.
I can help you begin a journey of self-understanding. Why you feel and do what you do. Together we will explore your past in a safe environment where you feel comfortable speaking about uncomfortable and challenging things.
We will explore causes and patterns for thought, emotion, and behavioral patterns you get stuck in. We will start your journey towards healing. We will create a more positive, healthy inner dialogue.
Therapy for Bicultural and Multicultural individuals and families
Family relationships are complex. Being a part of a multicultural family is even more complicated. Members of your family have grown up in different countries with different values. Some have immigrated, some have not.
You may have different languages as your native tongue or the language you use daily. You identify as members of different cultures and have different lifestyles.
Adjusting to new cultures and lifestyles can be challenging and isolating. Bicultural family dynamics can be confusing and stressful. They can lead to cognitive distortions and negative core beliefs about yourself and your family.
I understand this struggle. As an immigrant and bicultural family member myself, I know what you and your family are going through.
In both American and Asian cultures, shame can be one of the biggest barriers that keep clients from experiencing breakthroughs in their lives. Being seen, understood, and known can feel scary or uncomfortable. However, it can bring tremendous healing.
Your family’s story is powerful. I will create a safe space to unpack your experiences. Together we will work towards an increased understanding of one another and your true identities. To do this, I utilize the family systems approach as the family is essential to collectivistic cultures.
My biggest strength is my ability to understand and empathize with people with diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. As a 1.5 generation Asian-American, I can understand and relate with people whose stressors come from cultural expectations and differences.
A place where your child or teen can feel safe and build strength and confidence
You love your joyful, happy child or teen. Yet lately, they seem different. Their behavior has changed. They don’t seem like the child you have known for years. They are anxious, moody, or quick to anger. They are withdrawn and seek isolation over interaction with family. They lack the motivation to do things they used to love. Their favorite activities don’t interest them as much. They might be having trouble establishing solid eating or sleeping patterns.
These can all be signs of significant stress in a teen or child. It is difficult to think your child or teen could be stressed, anxious, or depressed about anything.
However, children face a multitude of challenges. They may face language barriers, cultural differences, generational differences, social and family expectations, and other stressors. All of these can deeply impact a child or teen to the point of trauma, anxiety, or depression. Talking to a professional therapist might be best for them.
I can help. I provide therapy to children and families of diverse populations experiencing behavioral and emotional challenges. I am a Registered Play Therapist and use several approaches when working with children including Child-Centered Play Therapy and Interpersonal Neurobiology. These are developmentally responsive, play-based mental health interventions designed for children ages 3-11 who have social, emotional, behavioral, or relational challenges.
We use play relationships to provide a safe, consistent, therapeutic environment in which a child can experience full acceptance, empathy, and understanding from the therapist. They process inner experiences and feelings through play and symbols.
I will be a safe space for your child or teen. I will help explore their unique inner world and identify stressors and unhealthy behavior patterns. I encourage them to be courageous and share thoughts and feelings and support them during their journey.
I guide them towards a greater understanding of themselves and grow their self-esteem. I will help your child grow and develop healthier coping skills, relaxation techniques, and relationships that will serve them for the rest of their lives.
Therapy can work for your family too.
When working with children and teens, I like to involve at least one caregiver in the process. I believe a child needs to identify their support system outside of therapy. Collateral sessions can help the caregivers understand, assist, and support the child at home in their process of healing. Family sessions can also help your child and your family dynamic.
You love your family. There are so many things that make each relationship and your collective unit unique. At times you enjoy one another’s company, and you see how unique and important each individual is to your family dynamic.
However, you have patterns of conflict in your dynamic as well. Old arguments always seem to arise; patterns of behavior you feel stuck in. You end up in fights over the smallest of disagreements. Harsh words are exchanged, and you cannot seem to understand each other. This is hurtful, destructive, and unhealthy for each person as well as the collective unit.
You feel as though the individuals in your family have different values and expectations. You cannot seem to bridge the gap or understand what page each other is on.
It is vital to have a dynamic that fosters open communication and support between family members. I specialize in family relationships and parent coaching. I help individuals and families who feel depressed, anxious and overwhelmed by unrealistic familial and societal expectations.
When we identify these negative behavioral patterns, we can learn to identify your individual and collective strengths. Using these strengths, we can move forward to create better connections between each individual and the collective unit.
Therapy with Me: A safe, supportive space to explore
I wanted to become a therapist as a result of my multicultural upbringing. After experiencing confusion and isolation in my childhood, confiding in a mentor brought light to my world. I realized that I could bring light to others facing similar circumstances. I desire to give people a safe space to share their stories and support them in finding their true strengths and identities.
I received my Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from Fuller Seminary, and have worked in community mental health organizations working with children, teens, adults, and families. I utilize components and tools from Evidence-Based Treatments such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to identify cognitive distortions through thoughts, feelings, and actions. I also use tools from Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help process traumatic experiences.
My clients describe me as a supportive, fun, and trusted therapist. I understand and empathize deeply with those who come from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. I sit with clients without any biases or judgment. I can offer you unconditional support. The first step to your healing is to reach out and begin this journey together.
