Teen & Adult ADHD Coaching

Do you find yourself struggling with attention, time management, and impulse control?

You might find yourself struggling to pay attention to things that are boring or not interesting while at the same time fighting to pull your attention away from things that you really enjoy. You might have difficulty getting started on tasks on time or responding to texts and emails in a timely manner. You might say things without thinking first, or have trouble waiting in line or in traffic. Maybe you know someone who is diagnosed with ADHD, and you think a lot of their symptoms sound a lot like what you experience.

What is ADHD?

ADHD stands for Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. It is a chronic condition often diagnosed in childhood, but it can be diagnosed in adults too. It can affect your ability to control your attention and focus, your time management, your organizational skills, your memory, your energy, and your self-esteem.

There are three main types of ADHD: 1) the inattentive type that involves difficulty with concentration, planning, and organization; 2) the hyperactive-impulsive type that involves restlessness, fidgeting, and acting without thinking of consequences; and 3) the combined type that has a combination of symptoms. Many people who are diagnosed with ADHD as adults find they primarily experience the inattentive type or the combined type, as the hyperactivity tends to lessen with age.

Emotional Impact of ADHD on Adults

The symptoms of ADHD can impact your life at home, school, work, and even in social situations. It is something that many people deal with all of their lives, and it can take an emotional toll as well. You may feel shame or embarrassment for functioning differently than other people, or you may feel like there is something wrong with you because you do not meet others’ expectations. The pressure of trying to hide your ADHD can lead to anxiety, depression, and stress. The effort of trying to fit in a neurotypical society, one that does not appreciate different brains, can be exhausting.

Start on the path of action

Your ADHD symptoms may be impacting you in multiple areas of your life. You may have wished your brain could just work the way you want it to. You might be struggling to make your life the way you want it to be. We can help you get motivated and learn the skills you need to meet your goals. We offer an ADHD coaching program, and we will work with you to tailor our program so that you get the most out of every session with us.

What does Yellow Chair Collective offer for Adult ADHD?

We have psychotherapists and coaches who have been trained and certified to help people manage ADHD across the lifespan. We offer an individual coaching program that is focused on helping you make your life the way you want it to be. We approach coaching from a neurodiverse perspective and empower you to appreciate your strengths and take control of your own life. We work with you to figure out what skills are most effective and to act as an accountability partner during your journey.

Cultural Responsiveness

We understand that ADHD looks different for different people, and that your experience with your symptoms may have been impacted by your cultural background. Many BIPOC and Asian families may have trouble understanding ADHD. They may express shame or disappointment, call their children lazy, or accuse them of not trying hard enough. They may also reprimand their children because they are not ‘supposed’ to struggle or need help with seemingly simple tasks. In Asian American families in particular, the significant pressure to achieve academically and financially as well as the expectations of success without difficulty can be overwhelming. We also recognize the intersection of gender and culture, and we can help you process your ADHD experience in the context of your own family dynamics.

How does Adult ADHD coaching help?

Our coaching program will help you get started in taking consistent action to manage your symptoms. Our program covers eight different phases, with the understanding that the knowledge and skills contained with each phase are built-upon with each next phase.

We developed our ADHD individual and group coaching program through certification training and research on the most effective tools and techniques. We believe everyone deserves to be happy and to achieve their goals. We value neurodiversity and will work with you to tailor our program for your individual strengths and areas of growth. Our program contains eight different phases, with each phase building on the knowledge and skills of the previous phase.

The first half of our program aims to build your foundation for success. First, we help you recognize and accept your ADHD in the context of your family and environment. By understanding how ADHD impacts the different areas of your life, you can focus on the areas that are most important to you. Next, by shifting your mindset to be growth-focused, you will be prepared to try new things and commit to action. Then, we help you learn about your executive functioning skill profile. Knowing which of your skills are strong and which need more work will help us develop our action plan. We will also help you learn how to practice mindfulness. We know from research that this helps with intentional attention and stress tolerance.

The second half of our program aims to move you towards your short-term and long-term goals. First, we will develop realistic goals and expectations. Through daily and weekly action steps, as well as meaningful rewards, you will begin achieving your goals. Next, we will work with you to develop strategies to turn those action steps into habits for longer-term progress. Then, we will help you expand your skills and strategies toolbox to help prevent and manage burnout, and work on making modifications to your life to be more ADHD-friendly. Finally, we will put together all of the strategies and tools into a maintenance plan to keep you moving forward on your growth journey independently.

We know that everyone experiences their ADHD differently, so our program is as flexible and supportive as each person needs it to be. Our goal is to be a supportive accountability partner to empower you to turn your dreams into reality.
