Therapy for Relationships and Interpersonal Conflicts
Interpersonal relationships can be the most rewarding part of our lives. Intimate relationships include those between intimate partners/spouses, parents and adult children, and other close relationships. They can bring joy, love, security, and new experiences. However, they can also bring about conflict and challenges. Lack of communication skills, intergenerational issues, unhealthy or abusive relationship dynamics, untreated mental health problems, and unmet cultural expectations can be some of the reasons for interpersonal conflicts. This can lead to enormous amounts of pain and unhealthy behaviors.
Therapy can help you understand the behavioral patterns that detract from having the healthy relationships you seek. We will practice how to detach from distressing internal experiences (thoughts, feelings, images, memories, and bodily sensations), connect with the present, and take committed action in alignment with your deepest values. Ultimately, therapy can empower you to build a healthier relationship with yourself and those you love.
Therapy for Anxiety & Depression
Depression and anxiety build over time. They may start small, so small that you can ignore or dismiss it. Then suddenly, it’s shaping your routine, and you feel unable to live your life the way you intend. You may feel uncertain about how to just get through your day. You may only feel anxiety in certain situations but also want to be able to try new experiences without fear.
In therapy, we will explore the sources of your depression and anxiety. We will practice strategies that will alleviate distress and change how you approach the situations that trigger them.
Therapy for Trauma & PTSD
Trauma shows up in many forms — childhood abuse, intimate partner or family violence, sexual assault, crime, grief/loss, and more. The trauma you encountered may have been a single event or intersecting experiences that cut across multiple relationships at different times and places. After years of graduate school and nearly two decades in a helping profession, I am familiar with perfectionism, burnout, and stress. In both my professional and personal experiences, I have encountered others who raise doubts based on my gender, color, or ethnicity. I can help you feel more confident and engaged in your role. Therapy for Asians, Immigrants, and Multicultural Identities
Perhaps you are familiar with this immigration story. Members of my family have lived in four different countries across three generations. At times we lived continents apart and others at the same address. My grandparents were subjects of the British Raj in India. After a bloody partition, my parents were born in East Pakistan. After the Liberation War won their motherland its independence, they immigrated to Los Angeles with Bangladeshi passports.
I know what it’s like to be among the first Americans to arrive in your extended family. Acculturation can lead to life choices about work and love that confuse those whose acceptance we crave. This can inspire feelings of guilt or shame. These feelings can harden into anger, anxiety, and depression.
It can be difficult to find a therapist who understands what it means to negotiate life as an individual or within a family who identifies with another culture, religion, or both. I can help you. My approach is strength-based, empathetic, and stems from a base of mutual experience. Together we will work to clarify your values and take action to bring them into physical form.
